Rupert Hörbst has always liked drawing, as well as playing his trombone. In 2003 these two passions joined together for the first time. As a teacher from Rainbach near Freistadt, he is also an enthusiastic musician. All his leisure time is spent enjoying himself in the BIG Brass and Rhythm BAND FREISTADT. However he also fulfils his ’serious’ musical ambitions in many other ensembles in the northern part of Upper Austria.
During countless rehearsals and performances, as well as in long conversations with brass players, you tend to notice the individual idiosyncrasies of these ‘brass fellows’, he says. In no ways is this meant as a criticism; quite the contrary. Taking these idiosyncrasies, along with some self-mockery, he has put pen to paper in a series of cartoons and caricatures. These were exhibited for the first time at the Brass-Festival 2003 in the Brucknerhaus in Linz, after which he was requested to turn them into a book.
